A very interesting book by Dr Travis Bradberry (Emotional Intelligence 2.0) reported that business people with average intelligence generally out perform those with a much higher I.Q., by around 70 percent of the time. Why is that?
The answer seems to be that those with a higher level of emotional intelligence (E.I.) have a much better business skill-set than those who don't. High E.I. scorers are identified as much by what they don't do, as they are by what they do. Some of the characteristics of successful emotionally intelligent people include the following: - they don't demand attention; - they don't feel entitled; - they don't act like idiots; - they don't hold grudges; - they don't close their minds; - they don't stop believing in themselves; - they don't stay in their comfort zones; - they don't give in to fear.
We all know people who exhibit some of these characteristics. We might possess some ourselves. People with high levels of E.I. tend to have a 'cup-half-full' view of the world, who believe:
'If you think you can, you're half way there.' 'Life is 10 per cent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it.' 'Strive not to be a success, but to be of value.' 'I've failed over and over again in life. That's why I succeed.' 'Sometimes, not getting what you want is a stroke of luck.' 'A person who never made a mistake never made anything.' 'If you want to lift up yourself, lift up someone else.' I don't claim credit for any of these thoughts, but I would like to live by them....
